2003 Youth Scholarship Awards Winners

These are the essays of the top three winners of the 2003 Youth Scholarship Awards. These inspirational essays reveal a youthful optimism in the face of sobering realities.  Many of the students touch on similar community issues, such as water, sanitation, employment, education, the environment, and health.  The students wrote their essays on the following topic:

"What I will do for my community when I grow up so that it will be a better place!!"

Emmanuel Anku of Adaklu-Helekpe, 3rd place

When I grow up, I will form a committee that will plan in my community.  I will see to it that, the committee makes sure that, the building of the community are arranged in line.  I will see to it that, the community gets good water for drinking and bathing.  When a toilet is not in the community, I will tell the committee that we should plan for a toilet.  And it will be I will tell the chiefs in our community that, they should come together so that they may have one idea to rule the community.

When I get money, I will give them to build our school, and when I do not get money, I will use my skills to do works in my community and other people will look at it and also do it like me.  I will help those who cannot send their children to school if I have money.  And those who stay in the community without doing anything, I will find them work.  I will also make sure that my community gets electricity so that things will go on well.  I will see to it that, my community has a good clinic.  I will see to it that my community has a resting place or hotel.  When we have a visitor, we can send him or her to that place.

All these things I mentioned are what I will do for my community so that it will be a better place.

Shatel Kpesse of Adaklu-Abuadi, 2nd place

I can do the following for the community when I grow up, for it to be a better place.  Firstly, when I grow up and become a good citizen, I can buck up my sisters and brothers to become good citizens for the community.  I can also help the poor to become rich.

Secondly, I wish to help the schools and the teachers in the community to avoid dropouts.  I will also make the teachers and the parents to become united in the community.  I can also bring Christianity to towns and villages because as I obey and serve God, I shall spend my days in prosperity and my years in pleasure so that community would become a better place for all of us to stay in for joy.

I would also help the poor and needy people to avoid armed robbery in the community and see if there is no good water in the villages and towns I would help them to get good water for a healthy living. And if there is a quarrel between any community I can bring them together to settle any misunderstandings between them.  If there's no electricity in any community I would also help them to acquire electricity as well as television and radios for children to become happy.

Thirdly, If the harmattan season comes and there's a bush fire and through this a house burns, I will help the people and give them clothing, food, money and even a loan for their belongings and also avoid bush burning in the community because fire is a good servant but a bad master.  I can help the people to plant trees to avoid erosion in the community because trees help us so that wind cannot destroy our houses in the community.  I would make the community a better place for all citizens to obey laws and order in the community.

Fourthly, I would provide new uniforms for the school in the community because in the olden days there were different uniforms for every school but nowadays there's only uniform for all, which makes it difficult to differentiate between pupils of various schools.

Mawufemor Abornu of Adaklu-Helekpe, first place

What I can do for my community when I grow up is that, when I become a worker like a nurse, I would help my community through different ways.  I would let the people obey their king.  Electricity would come to the community and drinking water.  My work would help the youth to get work in the community so that they won't go to another community for work.  I would let my community get clinic so that when somebody is sick they won't walk far to any place for treatment.  Tree planting would go on so that wind cannot destroy our houses.  I would help them in building schools, churches and others.  Ther community will grow up through me.

As a nurse, I would train other girls to be like me.  I would make sure that the boys also get their work to do so that they won't be bad citizens.  I think I can call the youth and advice them to be doing communal labour once in a week so that the community will be neat and nice.  All the children would go to school.  When they don't get money, I would help them.

As a good citizen, when something is going on wrong in the communtiy, you have to stop it so I would make sure that I have done all these.  If am not doing any work, I can't help my community so I would pray to God that, he should help me and I also help somebody.  My community will be a better place when I grow up.  I would build hotels for travelers.  I would let them get market so that other people will come to the community to trade.
